Doris Driskill

My name is Miss Doris Driskill and I will be your child’s second grade teacher this year. Since I will be spending many hours with your child and will be seeing and telephoning you, I’d like to give you some information about myself, both professional and personal.

I earned my B.S. in Elementary Education from Davidson Lipscomb University and have 65 -70 post graduate hours from various colleges and universities. My first year of teaching was 4th grade in Brunswick, GA, while I lived on Jekyll Island. I moved to Southern California and taught 4th grade for 8 years, while having lots of fun doing California activities, such as snow skiing, going to the beach, traveling all over the state, etc. In 1976, I returned to this part of the country to be closer to my family and taught at the TN Women’s State Prison for 5 ½ years. Learned how wonderful my parents were during that interesting job and how some people haven’t been blessed with both parents to love, train and teach them. After that experience, I enrolled in Nursing School at Aquinas Junior College and found out that wasn’t what I was destined to do. Then I returned to teaching and was hired by Metro Nashville Public Schools and taught 3rd grade at Haywood Elementary. After two years, Haywood’s enrollment dropped and I transferred to Una Elementary and taught 3rd grade for 9 years. My elderly mother needed help with activities of daily living, so I took a leave and helped care for my 87 year old special student, who also was a teacher in Kentucky. After 5 years of lovingly being involved with her, I returned to teaching at Ross Elementary in the 2nd grade. I then transferred to Norman Binkley to be closer to my home, which is only 5 minutes away. I started with 4th grade for 2 years and am currently teaching a 2nd grade class in room 19. That makes 29 years I’ve been in this profession and I’m still learning new things every year.

I came from a family of teachers, who started teaching in “One Room Schools” with all ages. My family valued education highly and my grandmother quit high school to get married, but then returned to finish her course work and graduated Valedictorian of her class. She also was generous and helped the young students with their questions about their studies. Both of my parents are deceased – my father died in 1994 at age 88 and my mother died in 2001 at age 87. They were KY country people who were raised to be hard workers, honest and God-fearing.

I own a home in Green Hills and have lived there for 28 years. I have one pet, Princess, which is a black, sweet, loving animal. I have one brother and sister who are both older and live in Franklin, TN and Fort Myers, FL. I have lots of loving friends who do the following activities with: go to church, Pops concerts, out to eat, walk the Radnor Lake trails, etc. I love to travel and have been to Israel, China, France, Germany, the British Isles, Mexico, Canada, Italy, Spain, and Belgium. There are lots of places that I still want to see.

I love people and I love teaching children. I also love ALL of my students, even the “stinkers” , who I love to help get on “the right track”. Nothing pleases me more than for a 16 year old to visit me and tell me that I was their favorite teacher in elementary school. To me that is equivalent to being awarded Teacher of the Year. If you would like to meet me, or talk about a concern –please feel free to stop by Room 19, call the school office 333-5037 ext.119 or email me at ddriskill@mnps.org.
