Steve Martin, Librarian

Martin

I am originally from Champaign, IL, but I have lived in Nashville for the past 20 years. I went to college at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. This is where I met my wonderful wife Ann. She also works in Metro Schools and is a 3rd grade ELL teacher. We have two children who both attend Metro Schools, so we are all on the same calendar!

I never really thought about being a teacher when I was growing up or even when I was in college. I majored in marketing and sold insurance before moving to Tennessee. In the early 90’s I received a Master of Social Work Administration and worked in jobs for the State of Tennessee and Metro Nashville Social Services. I was a stay at home dad for a few years after my wife returned to work after taking leave to stay with our kids for 4 years.  I really enjoyed this role and volunteered at my child’s school a lot. During this time of tutoring and reading to students, I found that I really enjoyed working with children. I always loved going to the public library to select books to read with my children. A school librarian seemed to be a good fit for me. I got a Masters in Library and Information from Trevecca University and started working for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools in 2002.
