Carl Hester

Hester I grew up in and around the small northwest Alabama town of Florence (Birthplace of W.C. Handy, “Father of the Blues.”)  My dad, Jerry, is retired from the Ford Motor Company. My mom, Shirley, is a retired rural letter carrier. I love to visit them on many weekends and enjoy the woods, boating, and lakefront of the Tennessee River system.  My brothers are Jeff, Max, and Fred and sisters-in-law Kitty, LaFonda, and Laura. They brought me seven nieces and nephews, the eldest of which is attending the University of Alabama.  I hold B.S. and M.A. degrees in Elementary Education from the University of North Alabama (1978 and 1986).  I have had some interesting jobs in my life including working as organist and vocal liturgist for a Jewish temple in my hometown and currently work as organist for the Hillcrest United Methodist Church in Nashville.

I have worked as classroom teacher and as music teacher for Metro Schools. I began at Haywood Elementary School before coming to Norman Binkley. Partly because of my background I believe that if we were to put the arts first, then all other subjects would see immediate and dramatic and increased excellence.  I love my students, my job and I am glad to be teaching in Nashville, Tennessee.  We are enormously fortunate to be represented by the MNEA, TEA, and NEA and I believe that any teacher worth his or her salt should be a member.
